The Department of Philosophy is seeking to make two appointments at Lecturer level (US equivalent of Assistant Professor).


The successful candidates should have a PhD in Philosophy (by the time they commence duties). We are interested in candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas: Ethics, Political Philosophy, and an area of the History of Philosophy. Expertise (or at least competence) in bioethics will be an advantage.


It is hoped that the successful candidates for these permanent positions will commence duties in January 2013, but there may be some flexibility to enable a start in mid-2013.


The successful candidates will be expected to undertake research and to teach both undergraduate and postgraduate (Honours/Master’s) courses, provide supervision for postgraduate (Master’s and Doctoral) dissertations, participate in departmental academic activities, and take some administrative responsibility. A successful candidate with expertise or competence in Bioethics will have some teaching duties at the Medical School and will be involved in some ethics consulting. The usual teaching load is one undergraduate course per semester and one postgraduate course per year in addition to supervision of postgraduate students.


The annual remuneration package, including benefits, at lecturer level is R427 311.
