Association for Core Texts and Courses Call for Papers

Posted: 12 de January de 2012 by Fernando Furtado in Call for Papers, Event

It is my pleasure to invite you to register and propose a paper or panel for the 18th annual conference of the Association for Core Texts and Courses (ACTC) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, March 29 to April 1, 2012.

The deadline for registration and proposals has been extended to Tuesday, January 17.  ACTC will treat all proposals or registrations sent by the 17th in a preferred category to those received later. The conference is at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center Hotel. Because the event is earlier than other years, it is important that you register (and propose a paper if you wish) during this extension.  To maximize discussion, papers are limited to five pages.  Proposals need not be longer than a paragraph. The convenient online registration/proposal form can be found by scrolling to the bottom of the page at the following link:  http://www.coretexts.org/conferences/annual-conference/

The conference theme is “Liberal Arts Education and the World: Inquiring into, Preparing for, and Living in the Real World through Core Texts.” Some of the proposals already received are listed below. You may wish to use them as a spur to develop your own proposal. Others can be found at: http://www.coretexts.org/conferences/annual-conference/submitted-proposals/

  • Darwinian Wonder and Meditative Thought
  • The real world in the Republic
  • The Liberal Arts as Arts of Learning: Kant and the Eighteenth-Century Debate
  • Augustine and the re-invention of natural philosophy
  • Narrative Lenses and the Journey toward Self-knowledge
  • “Aristotle for Athletes”: Bringing the Great Books Where They’re Needed Most
  • More on the “Idea of a University”: Newman’s Less-known Educational Writings
  • “Shining” Choices in Homer and Tolstoy
  • Subversive “Lessons for Women”: The Tao of Pan Chao
  • John Stuart Mill’s Enduring Case for Freedom of Expression

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
