Teorema: Call for papers on “The Aim of Belief”

The Aim of Belief

We usually want to have true beliefs, and having true beliefs usually helps us attain our practical goals. However, many philosophers maintain that there is a more fundamental connection between belief and truth-one that isn’t contingent on our desires or on the practical consequences of believing the truth. This view is often expressed by the slogan that belief aims at truth. The main question in this area is whether there really is a fundamental connection between belief and truth and, if so, how we ought to construe it. A wide range of considerations have been presented as supporting the view. One is the connection between determining whether to believe p and determining whether p. Another is the need to distinguish belief from other cognitive attitudes with apparently similar causal roles in the production of behaviour. The issue is connected with other important philosophical questions. One is whether belief, mental content, or their linguistic correlates, can be said to be normative notions, as the view that belief aims at truth seems to entail that true belief is intrinsically correct, and false belief intrinsically incorrect. Other related issues include the involuntariness of belief and the paradoxical appearance of believing that your current beliefs are not true.
